LIBERSKI/YOSHIDA Duo

Casimir Liberski, a Belgian pianist, improviser, and composer known in his country as a rare jazz talent, teams up with Tatsuya Yoshida, the genius drummer/composer and founder of RUINS, who has long established his unshakable presence in Japan’s avant-garde music scene.

Through their duo project, Liberski and Yoshida bridge two generations and musical worlds with their debut album “Mizu, Tagiru”, using a methodology rooted in free improvisation and the blending of diverse elements. Their music can be described as a sea of impermanence and natural forces—ranging from wild progressive mass punk to contemporary free jazz and electro-acoustic experimentalism, flowing impulsively between surging waves and moments of quietude.

The two first met in Brussels the year before the COVID-19 pandemic began, when Yoshida visited Europe on tour with his project Sax Ruins, featuring saxophonist Ryoko Ono. After sitting in on one of their performances, Liberski began individual collaborations with both Ono and Yoshida.

In winter 2023, when Japan finally reopened its borders, Liberski visited Tokyo and performed with Yoshida at a small club called Thelonious. Thanks to Yoshida’s quick thinking in recording the performance, this album was born.

Upon John Zorn’s recommendation, the mixing was handled by James Dellatacoma, and the mastering by Michael Fossenkemper. The album artwork was created by Belgian artist Pascal Bernier.

Mizu, Tagiru follows their first single “Climate Changes” (Totalism, 09/01/2023), released just before their live duo performance on September 4, 2023, at Werkplaats Walter in Belgium.

N°2  稀有な才能を持つジャズミュージシャンとしてベルギーで知られるカジミール・リベ ルスキ (ピアニスト、即興演奏家、作曲家) が、RUINSを結成した鬼才ドラマー/作曲家 として知られる吉田達也と演奏を共にする。同氏は、日本のアバンギャルド音楽界にお いて不動の地位を確立した人物だ。リベルスキ/吉田のデュオは、自由即興と多様な要 素の混じり合う手法を通し、デビューアルバム『水、滾る』で２つの世代と音楽的世界 を繋ぎ合わせた。荒々しいプログレッシブ・マス・パンクから現代フリージャズやエレ クトロ・アコースティックな実験音楽まで、その音楽は、衝動的うねりから静けさの瞬 間までを行き来する自然のフォース、無常の海とも表現できるだろう。 ２人は、コロナ禍に入る前の年に、吉田達也がサックス奏者小埜涼子とのプロジェクト Sax Ruinsのツアーでヨーロッパを訪れた際にブリュッセルで出会った。Sax Ruinsの演 奏にシットインで参加したことがきっかけとなり、リベルスキは小埜涼子と吉田達也の ２人それぞれとのコラボレーションを開始した。日本がようやく国境を開いた2023年の 冬、リベルスキは東京を訪れ、『THELONIOUS (セロニアス)』という小さなクラブで 吉田達也と演奏を共にしている。その演奏を録音した吉田の気転により、このアルバム が生まれることとなった。 ジョン・ゾーンの推薦により、アルバムのミキシングはジェームス・デラタコマが、マ スタリングはマイケル・フォッセンケンパーが手がけた。アルバムカバーのアートワー クは、ベルギー出身のアーティスト、パスカル・ベルニエによるものだ。 『水、滾る』は、2023年9月4日にベルギーの Werkplaats Walter で二人が共演した直前 にリリースされたファーストシングル『Climate Changes』(Totalism, 09/01/2023) に続く 二作目となる。
